Our Summer Programs
For most children and youth summer means playing all day, going on vacations, and enjoying the outdoors. When the new school year starts, they're recharged and ready for the next grade.
But for children from low-income neighborhoods, summer is more often a season of "learning loss." Without the daily stimulation of school life, disadvantaged students often start the new school year behind their classmates.
To help the children of our community learn and grow during the summer months, Reading and Beyond has three programs to fill the academic gap with proven programs and instructors.

Summer Academy
June 27th - August 5th
Summer Academy is six-week academic based program for elementary school students. This program operates at four sites throughout Fresno and includes reading tutoring, fitness and sports, arts and crafts, educational games, and much more.

Kindercamp
June 13th - June 30th
The goal of the Kindercamp Program is to help children transition smoothly into kindergarten, while providing information and support for parents on how to navigate the school system. Children who have not attended preschool and/or participate in early childhood education programming are given priority. The program activities are designed to enhance social-emotional development and promote readiness for kindergarten. Each family receives a home visit during which children are administered a developmental screening and families are referred to community programs, based upon interest and need.

Upward Bound Summer Institute
June 13th - July 22nd
Upward Bound is our college preparation program, created in partnership with Central Unified School District. We implement a six-week, intensive Summer Institute providing academic instruction in math, composition, literature, laboratory science, and foreign language. Cultural and college/university field trips are also provided to enrolled student scholars.

Our volunteers are the backbone of our organization and are vital to the academic success of our students. They donate their time to help our students improve their reading skills; students who are often several grades behind when first entering our program.

Summer Book Drive
Supervised Children’s Rooms
As part of our Early Childhood Education program, Reading and Beyond runs six Supervised Children's Rooms throughout Fresno County, offering free childcare to families seeking qualified county services.
In a friendly competition between the six locations, a book drive was held to provide books for participating families to take home. Over 2,400 new and gently used books were donated by Fresno County staff. 1,300 books came from the Fairgrounds Site, winner of the competition.
The books collected will be distributed at their respective sites as part of a take-home package for families that includes a canvas bag, books, and pamphlets for parents.
Reading and Beyond extends thanks to the many Fresno County staff members that donated books.
