KGPE Volunteer Fair

On April 12, KGPE-47 held their 2nd Annual Volunteer Fair and Telethon.  The fair took place outside while the telethon broadcast all day from within the studio.

Reading and Beyond was one of the many organizations at the fair, seeking new volunteers.  The fair allowed us to speak with visitors about our programs and services, and how volunteers are vital to the success of our organization and of our students.

We wish to thanks KGPE-47 for inviting us to the event.  During the fair, 47 visitors signed up for more information on becoming a volunteer with Reading and Beyond.

A Day of Fun, Health, and Learning at Kaiser

On April 20th, Kaiser Permanente hosted 30 Reading and Beyond families at the Kaiser Medical Center Earth Day Celebration.

Parents and children were treated to presentations, games, demos, and free fresh produce from their Farmers Market.  One of the day's highlights was a live theater presentation called "The Best Me," which inspires students to make healthier choices by teaching them to get up, play hard for a least an hour a day, limit screen time to less than two hours per day, eat more fruits and veggies, and drink water instead of sugary soda and juice drinks.

Parents and children alike had a great time.  We wish to thank Kaiser for hosting us at this wonderful event!

PRSA 2011 Image Awards

Reading And Beyond website wins Award Of Excellence

On May 20th, Reading and Beyond received the Award of Excellence for Best Website at the 2011 Image Awards, presented by the Central California Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).

The Image Awards honor works of distinction by professionals in public relations, communications, marketing, and advertising in Central California.  When reviewing website entries, PRSA judges consider several factors: objective, creative design, audience, and results.  The Award of Merit certificate is given to entries that meet most of the judging criteria.  The Award of Excellence trophy is given to entries that meet or exceed the criteria.

Website Developer, Lynn Harrod, accepted the award at a luncheon.  Mr. Harrod redesigned the website and its e-newsletter to coincide with our 10th anniversary.

Reading and Beyond wishes to thank the PRSA for honoring us with this award.

We Have a Doctor in the House

Yes, we do. Over the weekend, our Research and Development Director, Matilda Soria, graduated with her doctoral degree in Educational Leadership.

Matilda joined Reading and Beyond after graduating in 2001 with her Masters Degree in Education from Harvard University. For the past 10 years, she has been an indispensable part of our team by having created many of Reading and Beyond’s programs, being the organization’s primary grant writer and research director. The truth is that Matilda could pick and choose any place to work, yet we are honored that she remains committed to serve the children and families at Reading and Beyond.

Congratulations to Matilda on this remarkable accomplishment! We are very proud of you!

As part of the doctoral program, Matilda wrote her dissertation on The Impact of Collaboration in After-School Programs on Student Achievement and Attendance. You can read the abstract from her dissertation by clicking the link below.
