On October 25, 2011, Reading and Beyond held an open house event at our new home at the Mosqueda Community Center in Southeast Fresno. Among those in attendance were Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin, District 5 Councilmember Sal Quintero, and our Board of Directors.

UPWARD BOUND & VALLEY PBS

“AMERICAN GRADUATE”


On December 14th, ValleyPBS aired a live broadcast entitled American Graduate featuring six high school students enrolled in Reading and Beyond’s Upward Bound Program. The goal of the broadcast directly aligns with the goal of Upward Bound, which is to help students to graduate from high school and prepare for college.

WELLS FARGO

DONATES $10,000


On December 19th, the folks from Wells Fargo came to our office to present Reading and Beyond with a donation of $10,000 in support of our Workforce Development Program, based on the Fresno Bridge Academy.  Also present were City Councilmembers, Olivier Baines and Sal Quintero.

PROMISE NEIGHBORHOOD

PLANNING GRANT $500,000


The U.S. Department of Education is awarding Reading and Beyond a Promise Neighborhood planning grant, which is expected to be just under $500,000. Reading and Beyond will form a plan to utilize the grant in the Lowell/Jefferson/Webster neighborhood. This grant is one of 15 proposals approved, out of 200 organizations who applied nationwide.

ZUMBATHON!

FITNESS EVENT


Burning extra holiday calories while helping raise money for local children.  Ten local Zumba instructors hosted a two-hour "Zumbathon" event at the Mosqueda Community Center.  The goal was to help raise money for Reading and Beyond's literacy program.  About 200 people got involved to help local elementary school literacy and after school programs.

MOSQUEDA CENTER

BEAUTIFICATION DAY


On March 24, over 75 volunteers helped beautify the Mosqueda Center by picking up trash, sweeping sidewalks, raking flower beds, planting flowers, adding fresh soil, and re-painting signs and benches. Thanks to everyone involved, our home looks better than ever.
